This unit of study acquaints students to debates and tools associated with regional development and the economic analysis of environmental issues. It provides a useful preparation for professional employment in the field of regional development, environmental policy and management, and is relevant for students interested in economic and social issues in regional Australia. Co-taught by a geographer and an economist, the unit addresses four key areas of relevance: (i) regional development theory and practice; (ii) the economics of efficiently utilising and managing the environment ; (iii) debates on regional development in Australia (including consideration of the farm sector, Indigenous communities and environmental sustainability), and (iv) the use of GIS to analyse population census data. The unit requires no prior knowledge of economic theory or GIS software.
